Anti-Aging Benefits of Bioflavonoids

That National Library of Medicine lists 3038 studies for Bioflavonoids.  Obviously a well studied and significant component of the Anti-aging ingredient list for "The Sink".

Antioxidant Activity

Bioflavonoids, also called Flavonoids, are natural plant pigments.  They are a group of antioxidant substances that are present in most plants, concentrating in seeds, bark, flowers, and fruit skin or peel.  The human body cannot produce these phytochemicals, so we must get them through diet or supplementation.

Vitamin C Synergy

Bioflavonoids have a synergistic effect on Vitamin C activity.  An interesting observation was made by some Indian researchers from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences: the vitamin C in the extract of the fruit amla, which has the highest concentration of ascorbate in any plant, had over ten times the bioavailabilty of synthetic Vitamin C.  Careful analysis revealed that the bioflavonoid tannins present in the amla fruit protected and enhanced the vitamin C activity.

Cancer Cell Inhibitory Effect

Other studies have found that the cancer cell growth inhibitory actions of the flavonoid Quercetin (also in The Sink) was considerably enhanced by vitamin C.  The effect on the vitamin may be due to its ability to recycle oxidized vitamin C: when antioxidants neutralize free radicals, they become themselves weak pro-oxidants.  Flavonoids display an "antioxidant boosting" effect, returning ascorbate to its active antioxidant form.
